<br />
For those of you who have not heard the news, I regret to inform you that Rebecca died on Sunday, May 3rd at 11:30 PM.<br />
<br />
I was sitting at her side as she drew her last breath, just the two of us in the room.<br />
<br />
She was admitted to the UCSF Medical Center on Friday, May 1st after a sudden decline. She died in a private suite in the palliative wing with a sweeping view of downtown San Francisco.<br />
<br />
Per her wishes, she will have a small, simple Neptune Society service. We will ferry her ashes out through the Golden Gate and scatter them in the Pacific. <br />
<br />
Thank you all for cheering on Rebecca throughout her adventures and for your love and support when those adventures were so rudely cut short. <br />

It wasn't an especially prolific year for me photo wise. The fatigue from my chemo therapy kept me nothing short of house bound but I did manage to get out a few times and it's all because of the support of my friends. This would be a much more horrible experience without them and I can't thank them enough for sticking by me from these few outings to our weekly poker matches... I love you all.
<br />
<br />
In January we ventured out to a very, very wet Racetrack in Death Valley. We had a lovely time shooting from the edge of the lake being careful not to leave any foot prints but my prize from that trip was a lovely Kangaroo Rat which visited us nightly to see what crumbs we might have left around.<br />

A bit later in the spring I received word from a friend that he wanted to come photograph fox. I reached out to friends and was put in contact with a researcher aptly called the Fox Guy! We had a terrific morning photographing Grey fox before we headed south to the Catalina islands and found a Santa Cruz Island fox. I also got direction to some wonderful burrowing owls that took up residence inside a power plant.<br />

Then lastly this fall my favorite two trouble makers made their way from Australia and Seattle to see me. First we headed out to Point Reyes where we encountered a coyote, one of my favorite critters to photograph. Then I figured since we have a history of trouble in the high seas we should check out Half Moon Bay. We were rewarded by an enormous pod of common dolphin and lunge feeding humpback whales.<br />

Without a doubt about it, 2013 sucked for me - the worst on record and yet in some ways it's been fantastic. It started out ok... I was riding a high
from visiting Antarctica with my dear friends Paul and Meg in a tiny sailboat in Nov/Dec 2012.
Then Maverick's was called in January! I love shooting the surfers at Mavericks
so even though the waves weren't spectacular it was a beautiful day out on the
ocean and life was good.</div>

But
I just wasn't feeling right. Finally in March, I was diagnosed with cancer. Not the kind you just trim off and go about your day... this is the bad kind. I
listened to all the apologies from the doctors as they told me the cancer has
spread throughout my body - I'm not a candidate for surgery or radiation, about
all they could offer was chemotherapy. The pity in their eyes and sorrow in the
voices said it all. And so I started chemo... I knew it would be bad but
I wasn't prepared for just HOW bad. In one day ALL of my hair fell out. I was
lucky to be able to move form the bed upstairs to the couch and on the rare
days I could stand long enough to shower I doomed myself to sleeping for the
next 12 hours. The nausea was debilitating but the medications to suppress it
were worse. Then my doctor discovered that I have a rare genetic mutation that
makes one of the drugs I was on completely toxic to me. I moved to a new
regimen and while chemo still sucked... it sucked less.</div>

I
found myself able to take short walks to the dog park with my dog and husband.
There I found some wonderful wildlife - a family of grebes nested on my
favorite lake and group of raccoons came out to play. I got my camera in my
hands once again and it felt great.</div>

A
little while later I received a call from a friend "Get down here, there's
a family of coyote in my back yard!" this was the first time I had left
the city since starting chemo, the first time my friend saw me standing up and
walking (admittedly more dragging than walking). As promised he brought me to
his coyote family and I immediately forgot how sick I felt and stalked the
animals until I got a shot. A hawk joined me that day too, showing off a gopher
he caught. I slept the entire drive home - don't worry, Lee was behind the
wheel - but I felt good, hopeful.</div>

I really needed about two more months of growth to make a solid donation of 12 inches or more but fate seems to have made other plans for me.<br />

Locks of Love</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
http://www.locksoflove.org</div>
<br />
In January I started to experience ever increasing abdominal pain - after lots of medical tests and a short hospital stay my long story turns short into the hard news - I've been diagnosed with cancer. It's one of the most horrible and terrifying words I have ever heard uttered in my entire life. I start chemotherapy on April 8th and with luck and the hard work of the amazing doctors at the UCSF Hellen Diller Comprehensive Cancer Center, after a few months, I will go into remission and get back behind the camera. So here's the hiatus part - I'll won't be posting again until I get this under control - I need to focus 100% of my energy on fighting this cancer.<br />

Back to the hair: since chemotherapy often causes hair loss or at the very least hair thinning I thought it would be a good idea to chop off my locks and proceed with the donation just a little bit early. So last week I turned to my long term stylist Simon Mark who is a hair genius. As it turns out, I've been seeing Simon for the last 10 years - time certainly does fly!<br />

My friend <a href="http://davesoffagain.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Dave Cattell</a> was so awesome to give up his day to come with me and document the sheering process. I hope you enjoy his pics.<br />
<br />
Wish me luck and I promise to do my best to get back behind the camera before you know it.<br />
<br />
I wish you all good health, joyous laughter, golden light and lots of amazing friends to share it all.<br />

Just in case you are all tired of seeing still images of penguins... as if that could even be a possibility... I've put together a little bit of video footage from Antarctica. Hope you like it!</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
As we dropped anchor at Hannah Point I heard a familiar sound... </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
"Baaaahhhhh-roop-roop-roop-roop Bleeeeeeeaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh - Graaaaaaa-runck, Gaaaaaaaaaa-runck - Auuuuuk auuuuuuuk AUUUUUUUKKKK" </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
That could mean only one thing! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
ELEPHANT SEALS!!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I was ready... all of my language lessons from the <a href="http://www.tmmc.org/" target="_blank">Marine Mammal Center</a> here in California were about to pay off. Albatross may be top in my heart but elies are a close second.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I spent several hours leaning on the warm rocks and conversing with these weaners - every once in a while a female would lift her head and snort at us as if to say "Keep it down, I'm trying to sleep". Is there anything as cute as these huge black eyes gazing at you with wonder?</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
After a long while I moved off to explore more of the island. There are of course tons of Chinstraps - all showing off their beautiful new eggs.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Right in the middle of all the Chinstraps....</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The Macaroni Penguin is a new species for me so I was super excited to sit and watch them. The first couple I found was content to just sit and occasionally groom but the second was actively building their nest. The male dug deep into the mud to find a nice pebble to bring back to its mate. She seemed to appreciate all the hard work and found just the right spot for each small offering.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Walking around at Hannah Point one has to be very careful not to approach any high points because of the nesting Southern Giant Petrels. They are easily spooked and won't return to the nest after they've been displaced. I found one spot I could crawl to without breaking the horizon and spy on a nesting petrel. Turns out they don't do much when undisturbed... just an occasional stretch. I was glad to leave her to the task of incubation.</div>

Another area boasted 5 or six nests of the lovely Blue-eyed Shag (Phalacrocorax atriceps) Unfortunately a Kelp gull was also nesting nearby and didn't like me hanging around so I moved on rather quickly and found more elephant seals. </div>

At the end of the day I found a nice warm sheltered beach and settled down to watch a few juvenile seals push each other around in the shallow water. All this play now will prepare at least one of them to become a beach master... I wish them all luck! </div>

Photo: Remember the Keystone XL Pipeline? It's still looming out there and last March I visited the Platte River in Nebraska with the National Wildlife Federation. Two years after the Kalamazoo River Pipeline Oil Spill in Michigan the clean up is still not complete! That spill went largely unnoticed because all eyes were on the Gulf of Mexico. What's making this clean up so difficult, costly and time consuming? Tar Sands Oil. Still think Keystone XL is a good idea?<br />

"Get out of the boat, GET OUT OF THE BOAT!!!!" Easier said than done when you find yourself on the high side of a tipping zodiac! A moment later the rolling wave retreated and I scrambled to join my companions on the beach.<br />
<br />
And what an amazing beach it was! Over 100,000 pair of Chinstrap penguin (Pygoscelis antarctica) return to Baily Head each year to raise their chicks, making this spot one of Birdlife International's <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Important_Bird_Area" target="_blank">Important Bird Areas</a> (IBA). With it's large swells and breaking waves, Baily Head is considered by some to be Antarctica's most dangerous but worthwhile landings. However we had good weather and conditions so per our skipper, ours was just a "sporty landing."<br />

One one side of the massive rock outcrop is a small horseshoe-shaped cove with a dramatic steep slope which leads up to the massive colony above. The diminutive little penguins trudging upward through the snow to reach their mates - on a warm day the snow gives way, making the accent relatively easy... on a cold day the snow turns to ice and the slope more of a slick toboggan run.<br />

<br />
The other side of the outcrop boasts a long beach of black sand with a long gentle slope and a winding trail of penguins marching to and fro with purpose. The beach is dotted with large chunks of blue ice which drift ashore and give predators a nifty spot to hide.<br />

Yup, when you have that many penguins in one spot, chances are you are going to run into quite a few critters who are looking to benefit. I watched in amazement as a large leopard se<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">al (Hydrurga leptonyx) </span>surged ashore not ten feet behind one of my companions, scattering penguins in every direction. My shouts of "TURN AROUND" were lost in the din of wave, wind and penguin chatter - he had no idea the seal had been there. The penguins were lucky and escaped unscathed this time. Further up the beach I found a couple of penguin bearing wounds from narrowly escaping the seal.<br />

<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">The threat isn't over once the penguins reach shore... the Brown Skua</span> (Stercorarius antarcticus) and Southern Giant Petrel (Macronectes giganteus) will take advantage of any unprotected nest, scooping up eggs and chicks alike. Before you judge them too harshly, remember every community needs a sanitation crew. Together with the snowy sheathbill (Chionis albus) these birds help to keep disease from spreading in a colony as they keep everything tidy. With a short season and hungry mouths everywhere, nothing ever goes to waste in Antarctica.<br />

<br style="font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;" />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 12px;">The boat kicks and rolls, tossed about on the wave like a chew toy by a Doberman. A nervous giggle bubbles up from one of my companions throats as a new wave breaks over the wheelhouse, white foam retreating from the porthole window as the boat lurches to meet the next wave. A glance out the starboard porthole revels only the deep aqua blue of the ocean below as we cut forward at almost a 50 degree angle. Suddenly we are weightless but for a moment then we crash into the bottom of the next wave rising to meet us. </span></span><br />
<br style="font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;" />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;">Then the engine cuts and we are at the mercy of the wind once more. I can hear the waves sloshing on the other side of what feels to be a paper thin hull. </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;">Our speed slows and the waves fall into a steady, rhythmic thump, thump against the hull. Poseidon knock, knock, knocking as if to ask if any among us might want to join him in the icy depths below. </span><br />
<br style="font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;" />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;">But the Sarah Vorwerk is a stout vessel. All 54 feet built for rough seas. Where we landlubbers crawl and claw our way from our berths, her skipper strolls the deck with all the confidence of a man born of the sea. Henk has made this trip many times before, at least three runs per season for the last 18 years. His devilish grin puts us all to ease as he waves a hand... "Yah, yah there's nothing to worry about."</span><br />
<br style="font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;" />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 12px;">Our quest was to visit the Antarctic Peninsula at the very earliest in the season possible. In that we have succeeded. We receive word that the Lemaire Strait is still completely iced in, only the largest of icebreakers have the hope of passing and so we head instead for the South Shetland Islands. We drop anchor in the sheltered cove of Deception Island and our first mate and one companion who have been suffering terribly from seasickness spring miraculously back to life. Henk remarks that this is the first time he has seen Deception covered in snow.</span></span><br />

<span style="font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 12px;">Our first landing is at Whalers Bay and we stumble about as we try to get our land legs back beneath us. This place is a reminder of our violent past. Originally a safe haven and base for sealers, Deception became a home for factory whaling ships in the early 1900's. Large boilers used to boil whale carcasses for additional oils are still present on the island as are several derelict buildings. When whale oil prices dropped during the Great Depression the station proved to be unprofitable and was abandon (1931) but not before claiming the lives of the 45 whalers buried on the island. The </span></span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 12px;">cemetery itself was buried deeply after an eruption of the volcano in 1969 and only two memorials remain in sight. The pristine snow makes us feel that we four are the only people to have visited this place in hundreds of years but patches of black sand, snow-free from volcanic warmth, show a plethora of boot prints, betraying the hundreds of visitors this site receives every season.</span></span><br />

I saw the movie last night and while the critics are all panning the writing I have to admit that the opening line strikes a chord with me. I'm not a surfer, I wish I had the balance but I can't even roller skate without taking out a crowd of people and so I content myself with watching these incredible athletes and when the Mavericks Competition was called in 2010 I bee-lined to Half Moon Bay.<br />
<br />
Thanks to my friend <a href="http://www.jmg-galleries.com/blog/2010/02/15/mavericks-surf-contest-2010-photos-highlights/" target="_blank">Jim Goldstein</a> I knew exactly where to be to catch a ride out on a boat and before I knew it I was snapping happily away as the waves rolled past. A quick glance at the press boat made me feel sorry for the folks over there as they rolled with the waves, almost every face was green -- snap, snap, hurl -- they obviously weren't "<i>of</i> the sea" but they made a grand effort.<em> </em><br />
<br /><em></em>
As the next competition season prepares to open I've got my fingers crossed that the winds will blow up some grand waves and that I will be in town when the 24 hour call goes out! I can feel the tide calling me.<br /><em></em><br />

As folks were heading off to find a nice picnic table and play with some California gulls I noticed an area that was literally jumping! Couldn't believe our luck when I saw the tiny balls of jumping feathers were Snowy Plovers -- Lunch was immediately forgotten as I snuggled deep into the warm sand, inching close enough to snap some pics of this adorable species.<br />

Horned puffin are monogamous and raise one chick per breeding season. We thought that by the time we visited all of the chicks would have fledged. Only a few adults remained on the rocky colony, most were out at sea. As we took one last cruise around the puffin colony we found this last little fledgling ready to join his friends at sea. I loved seeing his little beak - looking similar to the over-sized paws on a golden retriever puppy. Super cute!<br />

Sea Otter, Enhydra lutris kenyoni<br />
<br />
I love most marine mammals but otters are in my top five favorite critters to photograph thanks to their playful nature, adorable faces and trickster attitudes. They are curious and will get into anything you might leave around - stealing boat covers, climbing up on kayaks or just popping up next to your boat to say 'Hi'. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Highly prized for their luxurious fur
(850,000 to 1 million hairs per square inch) this member of the mustelidae (weasel family) was hunted to near extinction. They once
numbered close to 1 million individuals but in the 1900's their
population plummeted to 1-2,000. Today they have rebounded and while still
threatened, it's not unusual to see otters
floating along the Alaskan coastline or crunching on clams with wild abandon. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOtxhfcNPVCes56UlxhYfVcOyxA2LAw4XMAcKdBvP5BNxlTGamA4BwyaopipZH4DacKgIST32Lxy-6rj5ApCD5AFw-9oyN2XL5DRpZLairQheTh-PmswX89lxW-732BDTdr4i_rUxtQseM/s1600/_RRJ2835.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOtxhfcNPVCes56UlxhYfVcOyxA2LAw4XMAcKdBvP5BNxlTGamA4BwyaopipZH4DacKgIST32Lxy-6rj5ApCD5AFw-9oyN2XL5DRpZLairQheTh-PmswX89lxW-732BDTdr4i_rUxtQseM/s400/_RRJ2835.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Unlike other marine mammals, otters rely on their fur to keep them warm rather than a blubber layer. They spend quite a lot of time keeping their luxurious fur clean, tangle free and full of air bubbles. It's a lot of fun to watch them rolling in the water as they groom.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
The average life span of a sea otter in the wild is 10-20 years with females averaging 5 years on their male counterparts. The oldest recorded otter in captivity lived to 28 years! As an otter ages it's fur becomes more and more blond so it's pretty easy to tell who's been around the block.<br />

I've been hidden away in my office for the last few months working on a book for the Ethiopian Wolf Project and it's finally off to the copy editor so I get to take a little break. Today I got to drive up to Denali National Park. I've never been able to visit late in the season before so it was a real treat to see the park wrapped in red and gold.<br />

On June 24th one of their supported projects, the Okapi Conservation Project in the Congo was attacked by rebels, six people were killed as well as 13 resident Okapi. <br />
<br />
The Congolese and UN armies have moved in and secured the area but the rebels stole all of the food and medical stores and burned down the projects buildings. People are returning to their villages but without aid the prospects are grim. You can read the full heart wrenching account by the OCP's Director John Lukas on the <a href="http://wildlifeconservationnetwork.org/about/news_okapi.html" target="_blank">WCN website</a>. <br />
<br />
Please consider making a donation to the <a href="http://wildlifeconservationnetwork.org/support/index.html" target="_blank">Okapi Conservation Project</a>. No amount is too small, they need all the help we can give them.Rebecca Jackrelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15395569578344480507noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5850703100316396512.post-77473175312443312222012-04-01T17:45:00.000-07:002012-04-01T17:45:55.010-07:00A Lesson in Stepping Back<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjk3qz8lY1LGBUy_b06iPkXpGdov7uzp_FP8uoiRW8U0sHdfl4TAr_FswfeZQudfsLSxoFp05jUjG7cCAWu6jQehrnMZszEgUh5-Kp-hu-UnJ8FKiioudfsbug76ln3QiBaPXX23W-ULU_d/s1600/RRJ000265.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><br />

</tbody></table>There is a natural progression to the life of a wildlife photographer. When we start out we're just glad to have an animal in our frame. As we grow we begin to watch the background, we change our angle, we get closer to our subject and then suddenly we discover the joy of a beautiful portrait. It seems then that all we want are full frame portraits with stunning detail in the feathers and fur and soft, sweet backgrounds in beautiful golden hour light. There is no doubt that an animal portrait when done right can make the viewer gasp in appreciation. <br />
<br />
Yet, how many portraits of the same animal do we really need? What does a portrait tell us about that animal, it's environment or how it interacts with it's surroundings? The next logical step is back. <br />

I last visited the manatee of Crystal River, Florida in 2010. It was an especially hard year for them with horrific cold snaps that left many dead from cold-stress syndrome. This year has been far more forgiving. From the archive: <a href="http://rebeccajackrel.blogspot.com/2010/03/magic-number-for-manatees-68.html" target="_blank">Magic Number for Manatees</a><br />
<br />
The area is growing - a new boardwalk allows visitors to view the manatee resting in the springs without the need to get wet. A visitors center with lots of educational exhibits is being planned. There was more monitoring, lots of gentle corrections ("I'm sorry but no, you can't hug the manatee back.") and tons of happy visitors. <br />
<br />
And how do the manatee feel about all of this attention? Well, the numbers utilizing Kings Bay are on the rise. U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has established a seasonal refuge (Nov-March) with key areas of Kings Bay cordoned off just for manatee: no fishing, no scuba, no boats and no swimming. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPxfvHFctJ2QXcA0uV044-UMIFLvQ2CMOjZVVjCosgcYOqH9AmnJfBBjYfAT_DHsVem0extqRKo1G3TNv9NPa0RGqCXiYyoyNinFun9p3wXwCkJBKKEkUdKgzSUeXMek7WLfZxWKrT-d5i/s1600/RRJ016742.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPxfvHFctJ2QXcA0uV044-UMIFLvQ2CMOjZVVjCosgcYOqH9AmnJfBBjYfAT_DHsVem0extqRKo1G3TNv9NPa0RGqCXiYyoyNinFun9p3wXwCkJBKKEkUdKgzSUeXMek7WLfZxWKrT-d5i/s400/RRJ016742.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>The increase numbers of manatee also bear an increase number of scars. With so many manatee in the water at one time it's easy to see how they come into conflict with boats. We witnessed one pontoon boat collide with a manatee in a side channel - luckily the boat was going very slowly and the manatee showed no signs of serious injury but the strike could have been avoided. <br />
<br />
<ol><li>Wear polarized sunglasses while operating a boat so you can more easily see manatee in the water.</li>
<li>Manatee like to feed on shallow sea grass beds - use a pole, paddle or a trolling motor to avoid pinning them.</li>
<li>Slow down!! Idle speeds are your friend in manatee zones. Believe the signs.</li>
<li>Check around your motor before starting your engine. Manatee like to rest in the shade of boats.</li>
<li>Do not feed manatee. It encourages them to approach boats and not everyone is going to be as nice about it.</li>
<li>Don't pollute - fishing lines and plastic bags can cause no end of trouble with unsuspecting marine life.</li>

<div class="MsoNormal">I don’t normally do book reviews, they remind me of book reports in school which inevitably leads me to hum “A book report on Peter Rabbit” over and over for days. (If you’ve never seen/heard the musical <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown</i> you are missing out.)</div><br />
<div class="MsoNormal">So what could possibly change my mind and get me jazzed enough to hum for weeks? Why Death Valley of course!</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">Death Valley is the largest National Park in the lower 48 covering more than 3 million acres, just under 4,700 square miles. It is the hottest, driest and lowest point in the United States. With such a vast area and extreme climate it is easy for visitors to become overwhelmed and miss out on photographic opportunities. Every person who visits Death Valley takes photos of Badwater, the Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes and the view from Zabriskie Point but did you know there is a waterfall in Death Valley? Do you know what time of year the endangered pupfish are most easily seen? Do you know how to dance with a chuckwalla?</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2RUFeSc-T3ZO2yD7upcbCUKHNZdfBzLi9dXjR-67YpXMM6SH-xLf88lhZeIrqJGYXTKF-v6tNJOz3rp1CZDb_A8jV4cmJWt5C4-MNKvln6_tip1I-AfbGRZFdyQ1tBWVrZRsMIkCtWNlm/s1600/Picture+1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2RUFeSc-T3ZO2yD7upcbCUKHNZdfBzLi9dXjR-67YpXMM6SH-xLf88lhZeIrqJGYXTKF-v6tNJOz3rp1CZDb_A8jV4cmJWt5C4-MNKvln6_tip1I-AfbGRZFdyQ1tBWVrZRsMIkCtWNlm/s400/Picture+1.png" width="322" /></a></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">Photographer Dan Suzio does and he shares all in his new book <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Death Valley Photographer’s Guide</i> published by Nolina Press. Dan has been photographing in Death Valley for the past 35 years and he still makes new discoveries with every visit. For those of you keeping track, yes that means many of his images were shot with… FILM! It’s a treat to see the film images holding their own against Dan’s more recent DSLR work.</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">The book is divided into three sections: an overview, location listings broken out by general area and finally an easy to navigate reference chart. It’s always tempting to quickly flip through the overview to get to the good bits of a photo guide but I recommend against that for this book. The overview contains not only wonderfully amusing anecdotes to enjoy but also a lot of information that will help to keep you safe when you venture forth. Whether you are relying too heavily on your GPS, running out of fuel or sticking your hand into crevices occupied by the local snakes, one mistake in the desert can cost you dearly.</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLamCcg53sO2rEdSzeaKzdLpYfM80X7tqD6yqSitPSKP08hzGJEL-6JV4qBmbLqjiUdYbINjxGxYgXtEo9rXOGpVGjjOn6pMPzpQbw_jqSiXIAaO4O5nTqPnT-LUh-IsEX_3XG8zmKcyyZ/s1600/Picture+2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="190" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLamCcg53sO2rEdSzeaKzdLpYfM80X7tqD6yqSitPSKP08hzGJEL-6JV4qBmbLqjiUdYbINjxGxYgXtEo9rXOGpVGjjOn6pMPzpQbw_jqSiXIAaO4O5nTqPnT-LUh-IsEX_3XG8zmKcyyZ/s320/Picture+2.png" width="320" /></a></div><div class="MsoNormal">At first glance this book appears to be a lightweight, easy to carry paperback but dive into the location listings and you’ll find there is nothing lightweight about the information! Within the first paragraph of every location you immediately and clearly find out what to expect to see in the location, when the light is best for photography, what wildlife and flowers to look out for, the elevation and how to get there. Read further for some surprising gems of knowledge that can only be gleaned by someone who has put in the time to explore. Healthy doses of inspiring photographs grace the pages though it’s obvious from the collection that Dan’s first love is reserved for the reptiles. Check out the beauty on page 46 and you’ll understand what I mean.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8AOQicI0VGpapZPssd3eqSZqU-NnEtVuSi6QglM2ys9AUcm9zgPE6PnvOWOuk2eNV0rwAlRX4rWopBaI4HwgDBRsvctuyOk3t70Mx_B85xPx_qApGmUr24FuCdHHx7my-XUT77v5XzytM/s1600/Picture+3.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="189" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8AOQicI0VGpapZPssd3eqSZqU-NnEtVuSi6QglM2ys9AUcm9zgPE6PnvOWOuk2eNV0rwAlRX4rWopBaI4HwgDBRsvctuyOk3t70Mx_B85xPx_qApGmUr24FuCdHHx7my-XUT77v5XzytM/s320/Picture+3.png" width="320" /></a></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">Personally I’ve been exploring Death Valley for around 8 years and I thought I was getting to know the park pretty well. After reading Dan’s guide I realize I’ve yet to scratch the surface! I can’t wait to get back out there armed with all of Dan’s generous knowledge. </div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />

In one sense 100 years doesn't seem that long - I was lucky enough to know my great-grandmother well into my college years. She was born in 1897 making her 17 years old when Scott set out. Knowing someone who was alive during the time period makes it seem not so long ago. However, knowing that Herbert Ponting took 400 pounds of camera equipment on that expedition, spent 14 months in a hut at Cape Evans and came home with just over one thousand images makes it seem like ages have passed.<br />
<br />
My camera bag weighs in around 45 pounds on an average trip but even with a few added accessories, I rarely need more than 100 pounds of luggage. During my 5 weeks camping in Ethiopia I took more than 18,000 images and didn't need to figure out how to keep my chemicals from freezing or how to safely transport glass plates back home. By comparison photographers today have it easy! Equipment today is smaller, lighter, more versatile, capable of capturing greater dynamic range and of being pushed to further extremes. <br />
<br />
And yet the techniques, tried and true, remain the same and amazing photos remain amazing no matter how long ago they were taken.<br />
<br />
On my way to Ethiopia I stopped over in London. I've always admired Ponting and Hurley so the opportunity to view their images of the Scott and Shackleton expeditions at the Queen's Gallery was priority one. I was completely unprepared for the haunting beauty of the exhibition. Seeing scans or reproductions of the photographs online or in books falls short of seeing the actual prints. The raw emotion these two photographers captured was palpable. <br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">'Endurance' at night - Frank Hurley 1915</td></tr>
</tbody></table>When I finally came to Hurley's 'The Long, Long Night' I was practically in tears. The image of Endurance caught fast in the ice, lit with ghostly light which seemed to foreshadow her demise is so iconic and moving. It struck me that if one wanted to capture a similar image today we would use the same exact technique almost 100 years later. <br />

Working in the White Mountains in California I used Hurley's technique of light painting the foreground Bristlecone Pine tree. I like the simplicity of the silhouette but in comparison, the soft light of the lamp gives the tree more of a haunted, soulful mood which speaks more deeply to me.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNskTMP1m8esU7c5oWwOKNeM_kHLOJp9MxpODETQdgo3T8LiocX7afs5lofxIQjpA4RnZ5j8WFs8l8Tlmf10MBuVFsCx_Z-zGV_1gjxIpXWooM7ZKqrnf3cge-Nft5TU5YqcX_W2XUqKuc/s1600/_RRJ9652.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNskTMP1m8esU7c5oWwOKNeM_kHLOJp9MxpODETQdgo3T8LiocX7afs5lofxIQjpA4RnZ5j8WFs8l8Tlmf10MBuVFsCx_Z-zGV_1gjxIpXWooM7ZKqrnf3cge-Nft5TU5YqcX_W2XUqKuc/s640/_RRJ9652.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
In Death Valley I used my head lamp to illuminate a branch which had blown onto the playa, opting to light just a portion of the image rather than utilizing filters which could have allowed for an entirely bright foreground. For me this image is more about creating a mood than just documenting the fact of the branch.<br />
<br />
And if you think the next image is out of the box and 'new' - think again. Even Pablo Picasso (yup the famous painter) and Gjon Mili were creating light paintings in 1949. <a href="http://www.life.com/gallery/50071/image/50695728/joe-mcnally-life-influences#index/9" target="_blank">'Drawing a Centaur in the Air' </a><br />
<br />
So take a walk through history, see who has gone before you and savor their triumphs as you incorporate their tried and true techniques into your own work. Techniques that produced amazing photos 100 years ago are never too old to be new again.<br />
